Trump government announces sanctions against former Argentine president Cristina Kirchner for ‘corruption’

The United States imposed sanctions on the former president of Argentina and former Planning Minister Julio Miguel de Vido for involvement in corruption schemes. The announcement was made this Friday (21) by the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. According to the government of, Kirchner and Vido abused their positions by organizing and financially benefited by bribery schemes in public works contracts, diverting millions of dollars from the Argentine government. As a result, both and their close relatives are prohibited from entering the United States.

The decision is part of an American policy to combat global corruption, a statement from the US Embassy in Buenos Aires. “The United States will continue to promote the responsibility of those who abuse the government to personal gain,” the statement said. Cristina Kirchner, 72, is the main opponent of President Javier Milei and leads the justicialist party. She was sentenced in 2022 to six years in prison and political disqualification for favoring businessman Lázaro Báez in public works contracts. The sentence was confirmed in the second instance, but the former president appealed to the Supreme Court.

Following the announcement of the sanctions, Cristina Kirchner stated, in a publication on social network X, that the decision was influenced by Milei and criticized former US President Donald Trump, ally of the Argentine agent. “You couldn’t contain yourself and went out immediately, leaving all the signs that it was your request,” he wrote. Julio de Vido, who was minister during the governments of Néstor and Cristina Kirchner, is also investigated for corruption and has been convicted of processes related to deviations in public contracts.
