National airports moved 4.2 million passengers in January 2025, an increase of 5.9% compared to the same year’s same year. Among the highlights of the month is Funchal Airport, which exceeded, in passengers, Faro Airport, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon remained the country’s main gateway, moving 2.4 million passengers, representing 56.9% of the national total and a growth of 6.9% compared to January 2024.
Porto airport concentrated 22.4% of the movement, with 949.6 thousand passengers, registering an increase of 2.1%. Faro Airport has a growth of 6.1%, reaching 309.9 thousand passengers.
The main novelty in the Balance of INE for January was the rise of the third place in passenger volume, surpassing Faro. Madeiran airport moved 330,000 passengers, a significant growth of 9.3% compared to January 2024.
The growth trend of air traffic remained, with an average daily landing of 65.6 thousand passengers at Portuguese airports, exceeding 61,400 registered in the same month last year.
Regarding international routes, France stood out as the main origin and destination of flights, with increases of 6.5% in the landed passengers and 1.9% in boards compared to the previous year. Spain and the United Kingdom followed the second and third most relevant markets.
In the load and mail segment, there was a slight 0.5% reduction in the global movement. Lisbon airport accounted for 76.9% of the total, reaching 14,000 tons transported, an increase of 0.6%. In the remaining airports, the load and mail decreased 4%.
The data confirm the growth trend of the aviation sector in Portugal, especially the increase of passengers in Funchal and the reinforcement of international connections.
