Turkish opposition politician Ekrem Imamogl deprived the position of mayor Istanbul after his arrest in the corruption investigation.
Turkish opposition politician Ekrem Imamogl temporarily deprived the position of mayor Istanbul, the Turkish Ministry of the Interior announced on Sunday after the court ruled on an imamogl arrest under the corruption investigation. TASR informs this based on the DPA report.
Imamogla was detained on Wednesday, a few days before his nomination was expected to be presidential candidate of the Turkish opposition party. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) still wants to decide on the nomination this Sunday. Elections should be held in 2028.
The leading opponent of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was then listened to on Saturday for the alleged connection to the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK). He was officially arrested on Sunday and the court ordered him to place him in pre -trial custody in case of accusations of corruption, but not in the investigation of the alleged terrorism.
Imamoglu denies the accusations and claims to be politically motivated
Imamoglu, who was elected mayor Istanbul in 2019, denies the accusations, saying that they are politically motivated. He described them as “immoral and unsubstantiated” and declared that he would not be intimidated by the court decision of his arrest. His lawyers announced the appeal.
Shortly before the announcement of the Ministry of Interior, Imamogl said on Sunday that legal steps against him were aimed at ending his political career. “Turkey has woke up to a great betrayal today. The trial that is in progress is not a court action, but a execution without a process,” he referred to the social network through lawyers.
The case has caused a wave of protests in Turkey every night and increased concerns about the weakening of democracy, DPA wrote. According to AFP, protests in the streets are the largest in the country in more than a decade.
