UFRRJ opens free museum with rocks and minerals from Brazil and the world

A Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRRJ) Inaugurated on March 12th the Rock and Mineral Museumdedicated to the exposure and research of the fragments. The new building is located in the campus Seropedicbeing the only one with this focus on Baixada Fluminensein the state metropolitan region.

The UFRRJ Institute of Geosciences will do the museum administration. The public can visit the site free Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm, by appointment by email museurm@ufrrj.br.

In all, the institution has a collection of 800 samples of minerals and rocks from various regions of Brazil and the world. The collection is expected to be expanded to 1,500 items after the completion of the cataloging process.

“It is important to highlight what the inauguration of this museum means in terms of accessibility to culture and science for residents from far from large centers, residents especially from Baixada and West Zone,” said Roberto Rodrigues, rector of UFRRJ.

The site also offers research activities, as part of the collection material involves scientific projects developed by UFRRJ researchers over more than 30 years.
