The grapevine produces and decorates. This is the ideal combination for any garden. But for the best results, we must also take care of these plants. One of the basics of care is a regular cut that we have to timing correctly…

When growing wine vines, we must follow several major rules, without which we would not receive quality crops. Winemakers know about this not only in our country, but all in the world. With a larger number of heads, it is really more than full -time work. But if you have only a few plants in the garden, you can do it. Right now, in early spring, it is high time to work.

YouTub video by the author correctly in the garden shows how to properly cut vines:

Before the vine begins to sprout

The main cut of the vine should be performed in the period of vegetation rest, ie at the latest in March. As soon as the buds start to sprout, you will know that you have already missed the period. But before you go to the garden, check the thermometer. Sunshine can sometimes confuse and feel the temperature, however, if the actual values are close to zero, rather wait a while. Even a weak frost could irreversibly damage the freshly cut shrub.

Don’t let the plants “cry”

What happens if you start pruning a little later than you should? The sap, which would already flow with branches at that time, would start to leak and the vines would “cry”. This is a problem with which plants are very difficult to cope with – especially on cold days when they still need all the energy they have. So if you find that the right time has already passed, rather accept the situation and do not try to catch up.

Beware of dirt

Before you start the breeding of vines, we must remember the importance of proper hygiene. Of course, it is not a washed hands, but a clean and quality tool for cutting. As soon as you use scissors that still carry traces of last year’s use, you are most likely to bring mold or other disease to the wound. It’s unnecessary. Therefore, do not hesitate to spend a while to care for scissors, which must be really sharp to achieve a straight and sharp cut without unnecessary damage.

How to properly prune the vines?

So we know when, but we should still learn how… how to prun it properly to really help it. First, it will be necessary to remove all dry, damaged and weak shoots, last year’s shoots experienced growers shorten to 1 – 3 eyes, according to its strength. The stronger the longer it can remain. Only a few strongest shoots, the so -called towbars, will remain on the whole bush that will become sufficient space for the future crop.

Plants need a firm support

Once you are done, you can start further work. It will be necessary to check thoroughly or reinforce the support. This is essential for growing success, for it will bear the whole weight of the crop. Soon new shoots will also grow. Whenever you walk around the vine, see it at least briefly and remove everything excess without much sentiment. You don’t have to worry, you just benefit the plant.

Enough water and nutrition …

Like other plants, there is no grapevine without a little fertilizer. In this case, the ideal compost or green fertilization will be ideal. However, this is not available in sufficient quantities soon. We must realize which nutrients are necessary for vines. It is mainly nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. Without them we will never achieve satisfactory crops and the plants will gradually wade. To reach for industrial fertilizers, always choose those that meet the requirements of these plants. However, the organic variant of fertilization will always be more considerate of nature and our own health.
