A 4.4 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale was felt at dawn on Monday, with greater intensity in Albufeira and Faro-but without causing personal or material damage.
O Algarve woke up this Monday with a earthquake of 4,4 the escade of Richter.
In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said that the earthquake had its epicenter about 75 kilometers south of Faro and was recorded at 5:18 am at the seismic network stations of the continent.
This shake was felt with maximum intensity III/IV (modified Mercalli scale) in the Albufeira and Faro.
The earthquake was still felt with less intensity in the municipality of SoulNo Faro District.
The seismos are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2,0-2,9), small (3.0-3,9), light (4,0-4,9), moderate (5,0-5,9), strong (6,0-6,9), large (7,0-7,9), exceptional (9,0-9,9) and extreme (greater than 10).
DESIGNATION | MAGNITUDE | Effects | AMOUNT |
---|---|---|---|
Micro | Micro Tremor of Earth, does not feel. | ||
Very small | 2,0-2,9 | It usually does not feel, but is detected/registered. | 1.000 / is |
Small | 3,0-3,9 | Often meaning, but rarely causes damage. | 49.000 / Again |
Light | 4,0-4,9 | Notorious tremor of objects within dwellings, shock noise between objects. Important damage. | 6.200 / again |
Moderate | 5,0-5,9 | It can cause higher damage to poorly designed buildings in restricted areas. It causes slight damage to well -constructed buildings. | 800 / again |
Forte | 6,0-6,9 | It can be destructive in zones within 180 kilometers in inhabited areas. | 120 / Again |
Grande | 7,0-7,9 | It can cause severe damage to vast areas. | 18 / again |
Important | 8,0-8,9 | It can cause serious damage to zones within hundreds of kilometers. | 1 / again |
Exceptional | 9,0-9,9 | Devastates zones within thousands of kilometers. | |
Extreme | > 10,0 | Has never been registered | — |

In turn, the modified Mercalli scale measures the “degrees of intensity and its description”.
With an intensity III, considered weak, the shake is felt indoors and the pending objects shake, perceiving a “vibration similar to that caused by the passage of heavy vehicles”, reveals the IPMA on its website.
The maximum intensity IV (moderate) and V (strong) of the modified Mercalli scale means that the vibration is similar to that caused by the passage of vehicles, the parked cars shake, windows and doors tremble and are felt outside the home.
