Washing clothes at 40 degrees Celsius is not always a good solution. It has been accepted that a higher temperature means better cleansing of fabrics of dirt and bacteria (Not all, because most dust mites and Escherichia coli die when it is much warmer).
However, this does not necessarily have to be true nowadays. Currently, the devices and detergents used are strong enough to adapt to lower temperatures. More important than heat are factors such as: washing speed of the washing machine drum.
