The severity of avian flu in the United States continues to affect the stock of eggs in the country, which causes them to continue looking for suppliers abroad, including in Spain. This has generated some concern, for example, in Mallorca, where price increases are already being noticed due to fear of a possible shortage of the product.
According to the Association of Balearic food and drink merchants, egg prices on the islands have already experienced a significant increase so far this year, exceeding 30% and approaching 50% compared to the previous year, figures that will be worse if the export of eggs to the United States is finally materialized, affecting the availability and cost.
For example, the price of a dozen Eggs of M size has gone between 2.07 and 2.10 euros to 2.6 euros, while those of size L have risen to 2.80 euros. OCU has asked the authorities to monitor these increases to avoid possible unjustified speculation.
Although a shortage is not expected, it is recommended to consumers to be responsible in their purchases and, above all, to the authorities, as already said, to investigate possible speculative practices to guarantee the accessibility of this product at fair prices.
