In the occurrence of an earthquake, every minute of early warning can save many lives
As we all know, we live in much of the country, in a seismic high risk zone.
The Algarve, of course, is in aggravated conditions for the possibility of occurring a seismic phenomenon…
We all internalize, more or less embarrassed, the notion of this reality. As for the need to act preventively, we trust the responsible entities.
Only in 2023, more than 60,000 deadly victims occurred in earthquakes and only in Turkey and Syria in February, in addition to the huge lives of lives, more than six million people were displaced.
But in Erzin, a city with about one hundred thousand inhabitants in the province of Hatay, Turkey, was not registered deadly victims and the damage was almost irrelevant. Why?
Because the City Council required and systematically required the strict compliance with the construction code. Very simple …
Only the earthquake that occurred in Türkiye and Syria caused more than 60,000 dead and 6 million homeless
Petpace, an organization that studies animal health, in collaboration with the London South Bank University worked on a project through which they use extraordinary extraordinary sensorial sensitivity for early seismal detection.
This study concluded that the installation of special sensors in animals detects effective signs, which allow to anticipate earthquakes, sometimes with minutes in advance, but according to the movement of tectonic plates animals may transmit warning signs with anticipation hours, resulting in the safety of many lives.
The first implementation tests of the project – “Animal Alerts” – were held in Lima, Peru, seismic zone under the influence of the Pacific Ring, where most seismic events occur and recognized as the most active area in the world in terms of tectonic activity.
The “Animal Alerts” system warned in advance for 18 seismic phenomena, and 9 million inhabitants were previously warned
Using this system in Peru, 18 seismic events were detected in advance and 9 million people were warned before the disasters occurred.
We perfectly understand that in our country the responsible entities should be involved in obvious and complex systematic control mechanisms, as well as in reaction to catastrophic events.
The institutional system implemented for prevention (?) Or reaction will naturally be heavy, complex and subject to organizational rules. However, of course, many lives will be at stake, not counting the material and collateral damage, resulting from these eminent phenomena.
Preventing, it is always better than remedy. Undoubtedly.
