Indigenous leader says he will ask the president not to encourage oil exploration in the region
Cacique Raoni Metuktire said he will talk to the president (PT) about exploiting the so -called equatorial margin by Petrobras. In a AFP (Agency France-Presse) aired on Monday (24.mar.2025), he said he will ask the head of the executive to give up the measure.
“I’ve been informed about the project and I will have the opportunity to sit with Lula to discuss the issue. I will ask him not to encourage the Amazon exploration project”He said.
“We speak personally when Lula took office. I asked him not to repeat what he did in the past when he built the Belo Monte dam. Now, Lula will come to my land and let’s talk about the demarcation of the indigenous territories of our relatives who have not yet achieved”Raoni said.
The chief said he waited for Lula’s visit in early April. The date, however, has not yet been confirmed by the government.
The equatorial margin, which extends from Amapá to Rio Grande do Norte, is considered a promising area for oil production. While environmentalists warn of biodiversity risks, the government assesses the economic potential of exploitation. Petrobras awaits release to start work in the region.
