Lawyer Paulo Renato Garcia responded to the allegations of irregularities at the agency; Minister argues that responsibility for the election is “another power”
Lawyer Paulo Renato Pinto, who represents the defense of former ABIN director (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) and federal deputy (PL-RJ), was coupled by the Minister of the Supreme Court (STF) Cármen Lúcia this Thursday (25.mar.2025) after claiming to be ABIN’s function to investigate the electronic ballot boxes. Speaking, during the judgment of the complaint of the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) about the planning of a coup d’état.
The argument of the defense is against the allegation of the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, that the accused would institute a working group at ABIN to check the reliability of the equipment. Renato Pinto said there is no evidence that the group was really created. The cell was composed by federal police officer Marcelo Araújo Bormevet and Army Sergeant, assigned to Abin, Giancarlo Gomes Rodrigues. The group would also have the support of the GSI (Institutional Security Office), led by Augusto Heleno Ribeiro Pereira.
According to investigations, Bormevet was a “Man of trust” of branch. He was appointed Chief of the Cin (National Intelligence Center) of Abin. In 2018, he joined the security team of former President Bolsonaro.
Bormevet exchanged frequent dialogues with Rodrigues related to opponents of Bolsonaro and asked the monitoring of these opponents. Gave orders to Rodrigues to, for example, send “bala” e “Sit the stick” in an advisor to the then president of the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) Luís Roberto Barroso.

JUDGMENT
The 1st class of the Supreme appreciates this Tuesday (25.mar) until Wednesday (26.mar) the complaint against Bolsonaro and 7 allies. The ministers decide whether there are strong enough elements to start a criminal action. If they accept the complaint, the accused become defendants.
The trial refers only to the 1st of the 4 accused groups. It is the central core of the criminal organization, of which, according to investigations, the main decisions and social impact actions came. Are in this group:
- Jair Bolsonaro (PL), former President of the Republic;
- (PL-RJ), former director general of ABIN (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) and federal deputy;
- Almir Garnier, former Navy Commander;
- Anderson Torres, former Minister of Justice;
- Augusto Heleno, former minister of GSI (Institutional Security Office);
- Mauro Cid, former Bolsonaro orders of orders;
- Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, former Minister of Defense; and
- former minister of the Civil House and candidate for vice president in 2022.
Next Steps
If the complaint is accepted, a criminal action begins. At this stage of the process, the Supreme will have to hear the witnesses indicated by the defenses of all defendants and conduct their own investigation. After the steps, the Court opens overlooking the final allegations, when it should ask the PGR to comment on the acquittal or conviction of the accused.
