Itaipu buys 3,000 hectares of land in PR for R $ 240 million

According to the government, the measure is a form of reparation for damage caused to Avá-Guaranis for the construction of the plant

The (General Advocacy of the Union) signed an emergency agreement between the (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples), Itaipu Binacional, (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform) and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, last Monday (24.mar.2025) for the acquisition of 3,000 hectares of rural lands in Paraná.

The acquired lands seek to repair damage caused to indigenous communities Avá-Guarani during construction of the Itaipu hydroelectric dam. More than 5,000 people in 31 indigenous communities in western Paraná will benefit from the agreement, which will have the initial investment of R $ 240 million, provided by the Itaipu Binacional Hydroelectric Plant.

“The Brazilian State, through the work of the Supreme Federal Court, AGU, Funai and so many other bodies, is delivering dignity to these communities. It is the first step of so many others who need to come.”said the general lawyer of the Union, Jorge Messias.

“These 3,000 hectares are a basic compensation. It is a 1st payment, and still small, from this debt that the Brazilian State has with these communities. This is an act of justice so that there is no more violence with the Avá-Guarani”, added Messiah.

The agreement also provides for the environmental recovery of purchased areas, as well as the guarantee of basic services in these communities. Itaipu has taken responsibility for installing drinking water and electricity supply systems in the new areas, implementing basic sanitation, as well as building or improving health facilities and schools.

“We made a great effort so that this agreement could leave. It is an important step and we want to adopt as a model to be followed to resolve other land conflict situations in other regions.”said the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sonia Guajajara, according to a statement released by Itaipu. “We recognize the work of the Itaipu leaders who had the sensitivity to articulate, defend and help in this conciliation.”completed.

In addition to Jorge Messias, the CEO of Itaipu Binacional, Enio Verri, the Minister of the Supreme Court, Dias Toffoli, the Minister of Indigenous Peoples, and Management and Innovation in Public Services, Funai, Joenia Wapichana and the President of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform, César Fernando Schiavon were present at the ceremony.
