The post of President Bundestag traditionally ranks the winner of the elections. The CDU/CSU led by Friedrich Merz won a clear majority in February.
Julia Klöckner of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) became the new chairman of the German Bundestag (Bundestag). MEPs elected it to this position by the vast majority of votes during the constituent meeting of the Lower Chamber of the German Parliament, TASR reports according to DPA.
The chairman of the Bundestag is the second highest constitutional official in Germany – after the Federal President. From a protocol point of view, this function is superior to the office, approaching DPA.
Klöckner, as chairwoman of the Bundestag, will open and end his meetings, to declare the points of the meeting and to award the word to individual deputies. He is the fourth woman in this post.
The post of President of the Bundestag is traditionally held by the largest parliamentary group. This is the CDU/CSU center -right block in the new Bundestag, which clearly won the February elections. The block of Christian parties consists of a CDU led by the expected future office of Friedrich Merz and the smaller Christian Social Union (CSU), which operates only in Bavaria.
