Rangel’s visit is the first of a high -range of the Portuguese government in more than five years
The Chinese Foreign Minister met with his Portuguese counterpart in Beijing on Tuesday and appealed to the deepening of ties with Europe, says Reuters.
The meeting between Paulo Rangel and Wang Yi takes place at a time when Chinese and European leaders deal with the intensification of global commercial tensions.
According to the Chinese Foreign Minister, China will work with Portugal to promote the bell relations. Portugal is the only country in Western Europe that has not yet adhered to Beijing’s Overseas Infrastructure Plan, the initiative “A Track, a Route”
“China considers Europe as an important pole in a multipolar world and supports Europe in maintaining its strategic autonomy,” said Wang Yi.
Rangel’s visit, the first of a Portuguese government in more than five years, occurred at a time when EU Member States are concerned with the perspective of a trade war with Washington and Beijing.
In addition to Rangel, the French Foreign Minister and the President of the Italian Parliament are expected to visit China and meet with high Chinese responsible later this week.
