In an interview with CNN Sustainabilitythe director general of the Arapyaú Institute said that the Amazon is on the edge of the ‘Tipping Point’, known as the point of non-return. The term refers to the moment when climate emergency changes become irreversible.
Renata explains that the tropical rainforest can turn into a savannah into a scenario of land temperature increase from 2 ° C to 2.5 ° C, associated with a deforestation of 20% to 25%.
For the Director-General, the world is not far from this point of no return: “Today, we have already surpassed 1.5 ° C for the first time. We are 1.75 ° C, we have deforest 17% to 18% of the Amazon rainforest. So we have very little time to solve this problem,” warns Renata Piazzon, in an interview with CNN.
The expert also states that in Belém will be “symbolic”, as the first conference in a tropical rainforest. “It will be a time to open the role of the Amazon in the global climate balance.”
