Thousands of Serbs protested against the transformation of the former military complex in Belgrade into a luxury project financed by Jared Kushner.

Thousands of Serbs on Monday in Belgrade protested against the plan to transform the former army headquarters destroyed in NATO bombing into a luxury complex, which is financed by the company of US President Donald Trump Jared Kushner. TASR reports according to AP.

Last year, the Serbian government approved a contract with Kushner’s company Affinity Partners for the construction of a $ 500 million complex, which counts on the 99-year lease of the land in the center of Belgrade.

Demonstrators organized by students demanded that the building of the former General Staff return the original monument status and to abolish the plans for the implementation of the project.

According to AP, the latest protest was part of a wider movement against corruption in Serbia, which began after the November fall of the concrete shelter above the entrance to the railway station in Novi Sad.

The tragedy claimed 16 victims – a 19 -year -old boy died on Friday as a result of injuries. Much of the Serbs believe that it has contributed to the corruption of government officials, their laxity and insufficient supervision on the construction.

Monday was also a day when in Serbia they commemorate the victims of 78 days of bombing, which the North Atlantic Alliance launched on March 24, 1999. These raids under the leadership of the US, which aimed to stop the hard interventions of Serbian armed forces against separatist ethnic Albanian Albania in Kosovo.

It is precisely mentioned by the bombed former military complex in Belgrade became a symbol of resistance. In his place should grow a height hotel, luxury apartments, office space and shops – along with a memorial dedicated to the victims of air air raids.

Serbian architects, engineers and opposition parties agree with Trump’s son -in -law. On the contrary, President Aleksandar Vučič and his government defend it as a way of modernizing the capital. Vučič has been supporting the US President for a long time, with his son Donald Trump the Younger recently met and discussed mutual relations between Serbia and the USA.
