The Minister of Finance, made on Tuesday (25), criticism of the treatment given by the government prior to the tax reform, whose constitutional amendment was approved in December 2023, the first year of the third term of the President of the Republic ,. “The only initiative of the previous government regarding the reform was not a measure of great importance. It was the reduction of the Jet Ski tax. This, yes, was the great legacy of the previous government regarding the reform,” Haddad said in the opening of a seminar on tax reform in the Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (FIESP).

He has reinforced the government’s view that the industry agenda is not a “past schedule.” By addressing measures aimed at quality education, cheap credit and fair taxes, distributed according to each person’s contributory capacity, Haddad said the country has a “golden opportunity” to resume a development agenda. He pointed out, however, the challenges of tax reform in his transition phase, given the expected pressure from interest groups for new exceptions to the value added tax rate, VAT.
“For us, the most important thing now is to consolidate this victory, consolidate this achievement. Not allowing the low policy to contaminate public debate and put to lose a reform that still has a long course to comply,” said the Minister of Finance by telling the businessmen and executives of the São Paulo industry that the transition will not be simple. “It is a transition that will require tenacity of the National Congress to resist lobbies, which will emerge from here until 2032, to try to expand rather than to reduce the exceptionalities, which cause the maximum tax rate of VAT to distance from the average rate,” said Haddad.
