A trial with a former member of the German terrorist organization Fraction of the Red Army (RAF) Daniela Klette accused of participating in armed robbery and attempted murder started on Tuesday in Celle in the Lower Saxony Lower Land. TASR reports this based on DPA and AFP reports.
According to the indictment, the currently 66-year-old Klette along with two former RAF Burkhard Garweg (56) and Ernstom-Volker Staub (70), who are still on the run, in the years 1999-2016 they fell in Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Silem-Holstein several supermarkets and cars transporting money. In this way, the trio received money to escape before the arrest. It was more than 2.7 million euros.
Since during one of the 13 robberies in 2015, the car transporting money was shot, Klette is also accused of attempting to murder. The process takes place at the Regional Court in Verden, but for logistical reasons, the first hearing will take place in Celle’s court.
According to AFP reporter, approximately 50 Klette supporters gathered in front of the Court building. One of them was held by a banner demanding “freedom for Daniel and all political prisoners”.
The process takes place under strict security measures. After decades on the run, Klette caught in February 2024 in Berlin. Together with Staub and Garweg, they belonged to the third generation of RAF leadership in the early 1990s, which in 1998 announced its dissolution.
The process of Klette does not include her participation in the politically motivated RAF attacks. In prison, Klette wrote a statement published by Süddeutsche Zeitung, refusing charges of attempting a murder as constructed. She stated that the members of the “revolutionary left” would not kill for money.
