Much is speculated about who will be the first Brazilian man to win a title of Olympia. When it comes to this, most people quote Ramon Dino, who competes in Classic Physique, or some Men’s Physique athlete. However, the name that may be closer to making the feat is Josué Fabiano Barreto Monteiro, known as Gorilla Albino.
Joshua is up to the Wheelchair category (meaning ‘wheelchair’ in English). In 2023, the year he debuted on the most important stage of world bodybuilding, he took third place. In the next edition, the athlete won fifth position in the tournament.
In an exclusive interview with the blog, the bodybuilder talks about his preparation for the Arnold Sports Festival, where he will seek the place for Olympia 2025, about the reference that became among PCDs (people with disabilities) practitioners of bodybuilding and various other subjects.
Injury and early career
When he was only three years old, Joshua fell skateboarding and hit his ribs in the curb. The fall generated an injury to his spine, which caused atrophies of various nerves in the region. The accident did not completely remove the movement of his legs, but made him need support to stand.
Shortly after his start at bodybuilding, during the pandemic, he began to stand out for the development of his physique. Maromba Mansion and the digital influencer Toguro, who indirectly inspired him to start training at the gym, were also those who raised him in the fitness world’s media.
To adapt to Wheelchair’s criteria, Joshua had to put the crutches aside and migrate to the wheelchair.
Speaking about expectations, the athlete admits that his rapid rise within bodybuilding “moves his head” and comments: “Sometimes I play with Ramon about who will be the first man to win an Olympia for Brazil in history (…) I have been composed for about two years. According to the bodybuilder, one of his main weaknesses is due to the fact that he was not an athlete before the injury, like most of his opponents: “My weak point is the region of the back (this is usually the hardest part for bodybuilders in this category to train because of the standard of movement of the exercise). Although he assumes that he is very careful with what he put by his power of influence, the athlete admits the bonus and the burden of being who is: “Nowadays, I get a lot of messages from people who are inspired by me, wheelchair users who started going to the gym and diet after seeing my videos. It’s a big responsibility, but it is also very rewarding.”
