Meteored’s reference model reveals the main trends regarding the time scheduled for April 2025, the second month of climatological spring. Alfredo Graça, geographer and expert, analyzes the main highlights of the expected precipitation and temperature in Portugal to April.

“April climatology analysis is critical to understanding the various typical time states of the fourth month of the year, as well as the behavior that climatic elements often present in different geographies of Portugal. The famous proverb “April, Águas a thousand” refers to a period when people have the perception that it rains a lot. Since April is the sixth rainy month of the year in mainland Portugal, it is a perception that is not surprising. The fourth month of the year has an average accumulated precipitation of 75.5 mm, less than March, but higher than February.

Slightly warmer time than usual in various regions

According to climatology, in the north interior and center the average temperature ranges from 13 ° C (Guarda) and 17 ° C (Vila Real), north coast between 18 and 19 ° C, in most of the center’s district capitals between 18 ° C and 20 ° C and in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Lezíria do Tagus, Baixo Alentejo and Faro around 20 ° C.

According to Meteored’s reference model, the forecast for April 2025 indicates temperatures slightly higher than normal (positive thermal anomaly) in the districts of Castelo Branco and Portalegre, in all regions north of the Mondego River, in the central and eastern groups and in almost the entire archipelago of (0.5 to 1 ° C above the climatological average reference). In the remaining regions of the continent, in the western group of the Azores and in a small portion of Madeira Island, to April 2025, no temperature deviations from the average reference values ​​are detected.

A rainy and unstable than normal April is foreseen in some regions

Climatology shows that in April total precipitation usually exceeds 100 mm in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Porto, and in the main meteorological stations of the Metropolitan area of, Alentejo and Algarve ranges between 39 mm (Faro) and 78 mm (Portalegre). In the Archipelago of Madeira this value usually sets around 44 mm and in the Azores reaches almost 85 mm.

By April 2025 Meteored’s reference maps bet on more rain than normal in most of the North and Center, stressing the districts that are west of the condensation barrier and some areas around Serra da Estrela (districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga and Integrally; districts of Vila Real, Viseu, Aveiro, Guard and Castelo Branco), with a positive precipitation of precipitation of 10 to 20 mm.

In the Northeast Transmontano predict between 5 and 10 mm above average, as well as in the central and eastern groups of the Azores. For the rest of the continent, western group of the Azores and almost the entire archipelago of Madeira there is no prospect of precipitation deviations in relation to the average.
