It’s coming! The warmer period when we can fully use the gardens, sports outdoors and enjoy nature is already behind the door. Outside, however, there is a insidious disease or rather disgusting ticks that can easily infect us.
Spring came. Look forward to chickens, bunnies and ticks
We associate spring with everything possible. Traditionally with eggs, chickens, bunnies, pomláz, but also with walks out into beautifully blooming nature or with the first real work in the garden. However, spring is also a time when not only all green, but also all insects, mites and unfortunately ticks awake. Although we are struggling with them every year, we still do not take the risk of a possible serious disease too seriously.
The Czech Republic is one of the countries with the highest number of cases of tick -borne encephalitis within the European Union. In 2017, 3,079 cases of tick -borne encephalitis were reported in the EU, of which 687 in the Czech Republic. This means that almost one fifth of all cases in the EU concerns us. The occurrence of the disease is seasonal. The most commonly infected between May and September.
Quite known is that in addition to tick -borne encephalitis, we can also be infected with borreliosis from ticks. But these are far from being the only disease that transmits ticks to humans. Lyme borreliosis is more common, but you can also infect with anaplasmosis or tularemia from ticks.
It is important not to underestimate the appropriate clothing and the use of repellents. It is ideal to avoid tall grass and densely wooded areas. After returning from a trip or stay outdoors, it is advisable to check not only yourself and your children, but also pets.

Vaccination? In the Czech Republic is still underestimated
Tick -borne encephalitis is a big problem. People try to avoid ticks, take care of their gardens, control each walk through the forest, and yet surprisingly few Czechs are vaccinated against tick -borne encephalitis.
Vaccination should be renewed regularly, it is not enough to be vaccinated once and relying on antibodies all your life. Unfortunately, this only works for a small group of diseases. Nevertheless, vaccination is an investment in its own health, although it has only a short durability, respectively between 3 and 5 years.
Due to the high occurrence of tick -borne encephalitis in the Czech Republic, it is alarming how little we use this option. In the Czech Republic, only about 29 % of the population are vaccinated, while our Austrian neighbors are 85 %.
If the vaccination scares you, find out relevant information for each type of vaccine. In the vaccine against tick -borne encephalitis there is no feared mercury and the side effects are rare. Vaccination takes place in three doses and is applied to the muscle.
Tick -borne encephalitis is not a banal disease
Tick -borne encephalitis is definitely not a slight disease. The first phase of the disease is manifested by fever, fatigue, headaches, muscles and joints. Symptoms appear in the first to second week after the infection. Often people ignore them or confuse them for another common disease.
However, the second phase already affects the nervous system. There are high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness, sleep disorders, consciousness, dizziness and vomiting. This phase already signals the involvement of the brain packaging and the brain itself. In severe cases, the limb or respiratory muscles are paralyzed.
The biggest scarecrow is that up to 40 % of patients leave home with long -term consequences after the disease. These people most often suffer from chronic headaches, problems with concentration, extreme fatigue or even depression. The limbs or facial nerve may occur, in the most serious cases there is permanent neurological damage or even death.
In addition, there is no specific treatment. Doctors can only support the body to face diseases. And that is why vaccination is the most effective prevention and the best tool to avoid this.
