More than 44,000 people have already signed the petition against the slaughter of Jacarandás on Avenida 5 de Outubro, in Lisbon. Carlos Coins ensures that fewer trees will be slaughtered than was initially programmed by the previous executive.
For four years in office, Carlos Coins has no doubt. The responsibility for the slaughter of Jacarandás on Avenida 5 de Outubro is from the previous executive. But the increase in cars in that area of the city remains a concern.
“Another policy to return public space to people is to remove parking lot and put it underground,” explains Joana Almeida, councilor of Lisbon Urbanism.
“They will cut more trees to implement parking and parking is not something that Lisbon needs right now. We need much less cars, less confusion… The city is exhausted,” says Pedro Franco, author of the petition.
Thousands of people question the need to remove the 45 Jacarandas. The camera ensures the transplantation of 20 rosewhere, but residents do not believe that they can keep the trees alive.
“Nothing guarantees us that the trees that are transplanted survive and what we have watched in the city is exactly these trees to die a short time,” says Rosa Casemiro from the platform in defense of trees.
The signatories ask the decision to be rethought.
“It’s a 2019 project, it was a need for 2019, it’s not a need for 2025.” states Rosa Casemiro.
“I hope the House very much goes back. There it is, a project makes it very much, dialoguing with people and residents have shown that they are not in agreement with this situation,” says Sofia Manuel, signatory to the petition.
The municipality will make two presentations, in order to clarify the doubts of the residents. They will be open to the public and take place this Friday and next Wednesday.
