On Tuesday (26), the town of Beit Lahia, in northern Gaza, was the scene of the largest anti-Hamas demonstration organized since the conflict that began, on October 7, 2023. “People are tired,” said Majdi, one of the protesters, who did not want to give his full name. “The people want Hamas to leave” and ‘stop the war’ were among the slogans sung by the protesters, who marched the streets of the city of Beit Lahia amid destroyed buildings, according to videos of the protest released on social networks.
Mohammed, a local resident who participated in the protest, said that many residents feared Hamas reprisals, but went to the streets anyway because of the tiredness of the conflict, and that there were no arrests from the Islamic organization, which rules Gaza. “Protesters do not want the current government, they want to live safely,” he explained. Atah, President Mahmud Abbas’s Palestinian movement, urged Hamas, his rival, to leave power and warned that if Hamas did not do this, “the battle that will be avoided to the end of the Palestinians” in Gaza.
