The decision of the First Class of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) that unanimously made it on Wednesday (26) for the accusation of attempted coup in January 2023, generated reactions among governors, which reinforced their commitment to democracy.
Minister Gleisi Hoffmann (PT-PR), holder of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, spared no words.
“Today the court spoke and made defendants, unanimously from the STF class, the commanders of the attempted coup against democracy in Brazil. This decision is very significant, because it was made in light of the facts presented by the PGR, respecting the due process and guaranteeing broad rights of defense to the accused. Everything runs within the democratic rule of law that they tried to abolish,” Hoffmann said.
Minister Paulo Teixeira (PT-SP), responsible for the initiative that introduced criminal types related to the coup and violent suppression of the Democratic Rule of Law, also celebrated the decision.
“Jair Bolsonaro and seven, among them General Braga Netto, Admiral Almir Garnier, General Augusto Heleno and former Defense Minister Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, became defendants for attempted coup.
For Randolfe Rodrigues, leader of the Government in Congress (PT-AP), the trial is not just about the individuals involved: “What is being tried today, in the Supreme Court, is not just the individuals, it is not an isolated riot, it is not just an attempt to bomb at the Brasilia airport, more than all: it is the judgment on the very resistance of Brazilian democracy, which has not occurred in redemocratization and occurred late Never, so that in our country and in the world dictatorships are not forgotten and never happen! ”
Senator Humberto Costa (PT-PE), president of the PT, also reacted, saying: “Unanimously, the 1st class of the Supreme Court has accepted the PGR complaint and turned into Bolsonaro defendants and 7 others. Next Steps
With the votes of ministers Alexandre de Moraes (rapporteur), Flávio Dino, Luiz Fux, Cármen Lúcia and Cristiano Zanin, the denunciation of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) was accepted, beginning a criminal proceedings that can result in convictions and prison sentences.
The former president and his allies now face criminal proceedings that will follow for the instructional phase.
The PGR called for the conviction of the defendants for five crimes: attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup, armed criminal organization, qualified damage and deterioration of listed heritage. If convicted, the added feathers can reach 43 years in prison.
