After the delivery by the United Kingdom of its Dragonfire combat laser to Ukraine last year, the commander of the Ukraine unmanned systems forces, Vadym Sukharevsky, said in December that the country had its own laser ready for combat. “We can affirm that today Ukraine is, if I’m not mistaken, the fifth country that has a laser,” said the commander.
Since then, little has been known about this weapon. However, according to the media it is said that it is effective against objectives that fly at low height, such as drones, mortars, certain missiles and possibly even some planes. Some experts have speculated that the weapon could be of national manufacture, although the exact manufacturer of the combat laser has not yet been confirmed.
The deployment of a laser ready for combat reflects the country’s tendency to expand its high -tech weapons arsenal to, hopefully, frustrate Russia on the battlefield of its war in Ukraine, unleashed by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in February 2022. While, the medium indicates that this weapon could be key to incline the balance.
Sukharevsky indicated that Ukraine is also developing a class of “nodriza drones” that transport up to two “first -person views” under them.
According to reports, the new Ukrainian combat laser is called Tryzub (trident). In his December comments, Sukharevsky also pointed out that the missile can counteract airplanes at a height of up to 2 km.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate that the weapon has already been used against drones that fly at low height, such as Iranian -made Shahed drones, according to the same medium. “I repeat: laser technologies are already impacting objects at a certain height,” said the commander in February to Radio Free Europe.
