Five people have been injured on Thursday in a stabbing in the DAM Square, in the center of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. The police have arrested a suspect and has cordoned off the area. A medicalized helicopter and several ambulances have come to the square, located in front of the Royal Palace, to help the victims and police spokesmen point out that the reasons of the assault are unknown for now.
Police have pointed out hours later than the five injured are these: a 67 -year -old woman and a 69 man, both of American nationality; a 26 -year -old Polish male; A Belgian woman of 73 and a Dutch 19.
The first face -to -face witnesses have already made some statements to the city newspaper, Het Parool. “I heard some blows. Then I saw that they had stabbed a girl from behind. Then, a boy ran away,” said an employee of a store near the scene. Another witness speaks of “an older woman,” stabbed. And AT5 cites “an older man”, among the possible victims.
Another witness has reported that he approached, along with an American tourist, to a girl who shouted in a corner close to a fabric store for work. “The tourist shouted: ‘He calls an ambulance!’, And then I saw a knife of at least 10 centimeters that stood out from the back, among the young woman’s shoulders,” he explained.
Police have confirmed that the suspect was immobilized on the ground with the help of a passer -by and has been transferred to the hospital with a leg wound. Four of the injured are serious.
A woman who worked in the neighborhood of the event saw how they arrested the suspect. He has said that the subject was “medium -sized and a passerby knocked him down and sat on top until the police arrived.” Although the ocular witness has spoken with the Dutch media, she prefers to maintain anonymity. In the social networks, images show a male dressed in black who is retained in the street. Then he is handcuffed by the police.
The local broadcaster of Amsterdam, AT5, indicates that a meeting of the Municipal Council was immediately interrupted and left the room to be informed of what happened.
