In Acre, newborns will be required to test the tongue and red reflex

The government of Acre sanctioned on Wednesday (26), two laws focused on the health of the newborns. The measure aims to prevent health problems that can impact the child’s development. The laws, authored by state deputy Adailton Cruz, guarantee mandatory examinations to detect conditions that affect the language and vision of newborns.

The first law makes it mandatory to evaluate the language frenulum, better known as the “tongue test”, in all state health units. The exam is done to identify ankyloglossia, popularly known as “prey language”, a condition that can make breastfeeding difficult and generate speech and oral development problems if untreated.

The evaluation should be performed before the newborn’s medical discharge, in maternity hospitalities and other hospital units where delivery has occurred. The implementation of the test aims to prevent future complications and ensures that babies receive proper treatment if the condition is identified.

Red reflex test

The second law establishes the obligation of the Red Reflex (TRV) test, popularly known as “Eyes Test”, for all newborns in hospitals and public maternities in the state. Examination is critical to early detecting eye problems such as congenital cataract, retinoblastoma and other conditions that may compromise the child’s vision.

The TRV should preferably be held in the first 48 hours of life or before hospital discharge. The evaluation will be performed by a pediatrician or by the unit’s assistant doctor. In addition, the law clarifies that the families of babies should be informed in writing about the exam result, ensuring that they can take the necessary measures if any eye problem is identified.
