National Tourism grows and Algarve stands out for its largest supply of hotel beds

The hotel sector revenues in Portugal rose 10.9% in 2024 to 6.7 billion euros, advanced D&B on Thursday. The Algarve led the national hotel offer in 2023 with 28% of beds and hotels with an average of 259 beds, above the national average.

Also last year the number of guests increased by 5.2% to 31.6 million and the sleeping increased to 80.3 million, 4% more than in 2023.

According to data from the hotels received 20.8 million guests, about 66% of the total, and registered approximately 48.8 million overnight, 61% of the total.

Residents in Portugal were in the order of 23.9 million, more than 2.4% than in 2023, while the number of overlooking residents abroad grew 4.8%.

Among foreigners, British remained the most important customers, representing 13% of total stays, ahead of Germans and Spanish, however residents in the US and the Netherlands, grew 12% and 9%, respectively.

At the end of 2023, the hotel capacity in Portugal was about 480,000 beds, 4.5% more than the previous year and just over half the total number of beds, or about 250,000, it corresponded to hotels.

The Algarve was the region with the highest supply of beds, with 28% of the total, ahead of the Greater Lisbon area, with 19%.

Considering only the hotels, it is in the wooden archipelago and the Algarve where the largest ones are located, being 274 and 259 the average number of beds per establishment in these regions in 2023, and the national average is 154.
