The mayor of Sao Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), returned to the idea of including the cable car as a means of public transport in the state capital. In a meeting with Councilwoman Sandra Santana (MDB), this Wednesday (26), Nunes discussed the bill (PL) 32/2025, which amends the municipal legislation to allow the creation of the new modal.
The proposal, however, is not exactly new. During the 2022 election, businessman and influencer Pablo Marçal (PRTB) had already suggested the use of urban cables as an alternative for the capital’s traffic. He proposed the creation of parking pockets at the city’s entrances, interconnected by suspended cables.
In the lean version evaluated now by the city, the plan foresees the installation of cable car in Brasilândia, a neighborhood of the north with rugged relief and narrow roads, which makes the traffic of vehicles difficult.
“You who are from the region of Brasilândia, who lives in a very high place, I’m here with Councilwoman Sandra Santana, our dear. We are here doing a nice project, see?
According to the justification of the project, local geography “exacerbates the difficulties faced by residents” and justifies the investment in an alternative modal.
The proposal foresees a system with booths for up to ten people, 4.6 km long, an average speed of 18 km/he interval of 15 seconds between booths. The estimated capacity is 3,210 passengers per hour, both ways.
Pablo Marçal Resposta
Upon learning of the proposal, Pablo Marçal mocked the mayor. “He [Nunes] recognizes that it is maturing as mayor. It is important that he recognizes the flush of criticizing what he did not understand, ”he told the CNN Brazil.
In 2022, Nunes classified Marçal’s plan as “utopian.” Now, according to city sources, the comparison between the two projects is wrong. While Marçal suggested a cable belt in the molds of the Rodoanel, the current proposal is limited to a punctual connection between high and low areas of a single neighborhood.
“Everyone knows that he wanted to make a cable car belt without understanding the topography of São Paulo. It is one thing to connect from one point to another, supported by project and studies, and the other is a promise that disregards the relief of the whole city,” said the mayor.
