Alert of the global alliance for vaccines
The Global Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI) warned on Thursday that a reduction in financial contributions from the United States of America (USA) could cause “more than one million deaths.”
The International Organization-a public-private partnership that promotes vaccination of about half of children around the world against some of the highest-scale-scale diseases-reacted to news from the US newspaper The New York Times, which Washington plans to reduce its support for vaccination in developing countries.
Given this scenario, Gavi warned of the many risks of this decision.
“A reduction in US financing for Gavi would have a disastrous impact on global health security, which could lead to more than one million deaths from preventable illness and endanger lives worldwide due to serious outbreaks of disease,” said Sania Nishtar, director general of international organization, cited by international agencies.

According to The New York Times, the decision on the cuts in financial aid is in a 281 -page document that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) – which suffered radical cuts after President Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House last January – sent to Congress on Monday night.
The document, to which the newspaper had access, details the subsidies the US agency intends to maintain and those that will eliminate.
Gavi claims to be helping to vaccinate more than half of children around the world against mortal and debilitating infectious diseases.
This organization supports vaccination against 20 diseases, including COVID-19, Ebola, Malaria, anger, polio, cholera, typhoid fever and yellow fever.
The former Portuguese Prime Minister and former president of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso is the chairman of Gavi’s Board of Directors.
