Tariffs: Trump’s trade policy will be harmful to the US, says Lula

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), sees negative consequences for the United States because of the trade policy adopted by Donald Trump.

The US President has high import rates in order to strengthen the country’s industry and correct what he calls.

Lula pondered that the consequences of tariff elevation should be a high price and, consequently, interest on the country.

“The only thing I know is that it will be more expensive for the American people to buy. And this one can result in increased inflation, and this increase in inflation means increased interest rates. Increased interest rates means containment of the economy. So I do not foresee a positivist framework in this tax increase policy,” Lula said.

The President of the Republic defended, on the other hand, an agenda of multilateralism to strengthen the global economy.

“I think it would be much better to discuss a price policy that was fair to everyone, for two countries. I am honestly concerned about the behavior of the US government, with this taxation of all products, all countries. And I am worried because, deep down, free trade is being harmed, multilateralism is being defeated, and the American president is not sheriff of the world. Talk to other countries to make their decisions, ”he said.
