With the regulation, it is necessary to have proof of age and perform verification of criminal records to buy the armament

The Supreme Court of the United States confirmed on Wednesday (26.mar.2025) the regulation on the control of weapons imposed on the government of former President Joe Biden (Democratic Party) in August 2022.

The measure requires proof of age, verification of criminal record and insertion of serial numbers for the purchase of “Ghost weapons”those that are assembled from kits purchased online and whose screening is almost impossible to perform. The information is from Associated Press.

This is because the weapons “Ghosts” They do not have the serial number that allows the tracking by police forces.

Before the regulation came into force, this type of weapon was found in various crime scenes throughout the US territory. According to the country’s Department of Justice, the recovery of armaments by police authorities increased from less than 1,700 in 2017 to more than 27,000 in 2023.

After applying the federal rule, the numbers began to fall or stabilize in some Urban Centers of the United States, such as Los Angeles, New York, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Already the manufacture of single parts for assembly of weapons decreased by 36%, according to the Department of Justice.

A case of great international repercussion with this type of weapon was the murder of, in Manhattan. According to the investigation, the weapon used would have been manufactured with a 3D printer.

The norm was challenged by pro-custody groups in the process called “Garland v.”which argued that the regulation, issued by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, exceeded the agency’s legal authority, alleging that the largest portion of the crimes would be committed with traditional firearms.

Regulation has been in force since August 2022, even while the court dispute continued. In August 2023, the Supreme Court decided not to suspend the measure. As a result, manufacturers and traders should now get licenses, register products with serial numbers, perform background checks and maintain detailed records. However, the Trump government may seek to revoke the rule.
