The connection between the dry fruits, the rural and the Algarve is deep and historical, reflecting the importance of these products for both the economy and the cultural identity of the region. To discuss this theme, will take place on April 10, 2025, at 14:30, in the auditorium of the Paços do Municipality building sec. XXI, in Lagos, the conference “Dry Fruits: Contribution to the Protection and Promotion of Rural Heritage”.
The production of almond, fig and carob is part of the identity matrix of the Algarve rurality. These crops, traditionally grown in ral, are associated with fundamental values such as landscape, territorial cohesion and biodiversity, which exceed the mere agronomic dimension. However, they have faced numerous challenges, which is important to understand and overcome, in order to ensure their economic and environmental continuity and viability in the region.
The conference is promoted by the Association for the Protection and Promotion of Rural Heritage, in partnership with the Algarve Coordination and Regional Development Commission (CCDR), under the “PRR Agro + Efficient” projects, with the support of the Lagos City Council.
These projects, approved in the scope of the Plan for Recovery and Resilience (PRR) and the Research and Innovation Agenda for the sustainability of agriculture, food and agro -industry, have as its main objective the valorization of traditional genetic resources, the introduction of new crops and the promotion of more efficient watering water management in the context of climate change.
The “agro + efficient” initiative is structured in five distinct lines of action and is led by, with the collaboration of a vast set of entities, including the University of Algarve, the Mediterranean dietary Center, the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (Amal), the Group – Grouping of Carob and Almond Producers, CRL. The development of the production and appreciation of carob, the on -site association, the Cothn – national operating and technological center, the Frusal – FRUSOAL – Fruits Sotavento Algarve, Lda, Fulgur It, LDA, Nutribean, LDA and a thousand plants – production and marketing of plants, LDA.
