The price of half a dozen eggs rose almost 80% between January 2022 and March 2025, from 1.14 to 2.05 euros, and this year has already faced close to 30%, according to DECO data.
According to DECO data sent to Lusa, only between January 1st and March 26 this year, the value of half a dozen eggs increased from 1.61 euros to 2.05 euros, ie 27%, and was practically stable (between 1.61 euros and 1.62 euros) from the beginning of the year to March 5.
Already from March 12, there was an increase to 1.70 euros, up to a maximum of 2.05 euros accounted for on Wednesday.
In turn, last year, half a dozen eggs cost seven more cents, from 1.54 euros to 1.61 euros, and in 2023, the price of eggs descended six cents from 1.59 euros to 1.53 euros.
However, in part of this period, from April 18, 2023 to 4, 2024, the VAT Zero measure was in force, which arose from an agreement between the government, production and distribution and included chicken eggs, to combat the impact of inflation on household performance.
According to the data collected by Deco, the Association for Consumer Protection in 2022, the aggravation of the price of half a dozen eggs exceeded 40%: on January 5, 2022, half a dozen eggs cost 1.14 euros, and on December 28 was already at 1.60 euros.
Egg price climb began to feel in the US, due to the scarcity of this potentiated food, from the outset by the influenza of birds, which originated the slaughter of millions of chickens.
The US consumer price index, which was published in February, revealed that the price of a dozen eggs in that market surrounded $ 4.95 (about 4.59 euros) in January, a maximum since August 2023.
Due to the lack of eggs, the US has asked for more exports to countries such as Brazil, but also to Europe.
The Portuguese Farmers Confederation (CAP) told Lusa that the country’s productive capacity is 104%, which means that Portugal has a small margin for export, taking off the percentage that corresponds to domestic consumption.
Portugal even had a productive capacity surrounding 115%, but increased consumption dictated its descent.
On the other hand, as highlighted by the secretary general of, Luís Mira, the Americans consume white eggs, while in Europe they are mainly brown. The different colors are related to the races of the chickens used to produce.
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump accused his predecessor, Joe Biden, of leaving the country in an economic catastrophe and an inflation nightmare, ”including lack of eggs in many supermarkets or very high prices.
“Joe Biden has left the price of eggs out of control and we are working hard to reduce it again,” said Trump.
