Pogaca is a traditional bread that is popular throughout the Balkans, from Hungary to Turkey. Its gentle, fluffy structure and butter taste make it an irresistible accessory to any food. Although it is prepared in various regions with small variations, the basic principle remains the same – a soft dough that melts on the tongue after baking.

The basic recipe consists of flour, yeast, water, salt and a little fat, usually butter or oil. The dough is thoroughly elaborated and lets rise to gain lightness. After rising, buns or pancakes are shaped, which often tend to bake with an egg for a beautifully golden crust. Some variants also contain cheese or potato filling, others are sprinkled with sesame or cumin. Then bakes in the oven until golden brown.

Another county, other Pogaca

“As you can imagine, each country adapts to Pogacu to its own, so it can be found in different structures, flavors, sizes and heights. Some of them have a crumbly structure, while others are more like fine white bread,” Hiloved’s website reveals.

Ideal as a side dish and itself

Pogaca is most often served as a side dish to soups, stewed dishes or cheeses, but it also tastes great, even with butter or yogurt. In the Balkans it is also popular as a mealing of coffee or tea, when it serves warm, freshly baked and beautifully fluffy.
