Action calls for compensation of R $ 500,000 for collective moral damages and obligation to disclose educational content about the case
The (Attorney General of the Union) filed a public civil action against the company, this Friday (28.mar.2025), accusing it of disseminating misinformation about the case Maria da Penha. According to AGU, a video of the company distorts facts about the conviction of Maria da Penha Fernandes, responsible for an attempted femicide, which led to the creation of the Maria da Penha Law.
The action points out that the video emphasizes theses of the defense of the aggressor, but omits that the court rejected these allegations after a broad debate in the process, guaranteeing the right to the contradictory and the broad defense. The content is part of the series “Parallel Research” and was released on social networks and subscriber platform in Brazil parallel.
The lawsuit asks Brazil parallel to be ordered to pay R $ 500,000 for collective moral damages and to publicize educational content about the Maria da Penha case, prepared by the Ministry of Women. Read the document (PDF – 4 MB).
AGU argues that the video induces the error in suggesting that the defense of the ex-husband was not considered by the authorities. However, Brazilian court analyzed all evidence and rejected the allegations of the defense, recognizing the attempted femicide and condemning the aggressor.
For AGU, video misinformation can undermine the credibility of the Maria da Penha Law and its public policies, as well as encourage hate speeches and new violations against women seeking protection.
“If the case that gave rise to the Maria da Penha Law is discredited, the anonymous women lose hope that their complaints will be heard and respected.”says the AGU in the process.
