The United Nations Organization (UN) said Friday that it has approved to allocate five million dollars to support humanitarian work in Burma (Myanmar), where hundreds of people lost their lives due to a devastating earthquake of magnitude 7.7, while calling to make donations in favor of this cause. The emergency response fund (CERF, in English) will mobilize this money, as usual, through the different UN agencies that operate in Burma, where the multilateral agency estimates that about 20 million people, one third of the population, has unsatisfied basic needs, a situation that has worsened after the earthquake. The earthquake and the successive replicas “occurred in a context of high levels of pre -existing needs and vulnerability, which further exacerbated the challenges faced by the affected communities, including many people who were already displaced” by the conflict in Burma, says a UN text. The organization expects to support actions such as medical attention, provide accommodation, food and water to those affected.
