Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro determined a reduction in the working hours of public sector employees to face the energy crisis in the country. The measure is valid from Monday (31.mar.2025) and lasts until the 1st week of May.
According to Jornal El Comerciothe workers will have a journey only at Monday, 4th and Friday, with a small time from 8am to 12:30 pm. This represents a weekly journey of 13.5 hours.
The determination is an attempt by the government to relieve pressure on the country’s energy system. Venezuela goes through a severe drought that impacted power generation reservoirs on the Andean region.
The country has faced frequent years in energy supply interruptions, with states such as Zulia experiencing prolonged cuts. The (Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict) documented, in 2023, 416 protests related to failures in the supply of electricity.
The government has warned that additional measures may be necessary if there is no improvements in the coming weeks. In addition to reducing the workday, there is an incentive for civil servants to participate in community activities in communal self -government rooms.
The educational sector, in turn, will not be directly affected, although teachers already operate in a regime of 3 days a week due to the shortage of personnel and low wages, according to the Bogotá’s time.
