Who was Heloisa Teixeira

Born in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Heloisa moved with his family to Rio de Janeiro at 4 years. She was the daughter of a doctor, teacher, and a housewife.

Heloisa was graduated in classic letters from PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University), with a master’s degree and doctorate in Brazilian literature at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) and postdoctoral in Culture Sociology at Columbia University in New York.

She was director of the Advanced Program for Contemporary Culture of the Faculty of Letters of UFRJ. There, he coordinated the Laboratory of Social Technologies, of the University of Breedering Project, and the M Forum, open space for the debate on the issue of women at the university.

The writer took office at GLA on July 28, 2023 with new identity. Eleven days before the ceremony, she had stopped using the surname of her first husband, lawyer and gallery owner Luiz Buarque de Hollanda. At 83, he adopted the maternal surname Teixeira. The relevance of the gesture for her resulted in a back tattoo with the full name.

At the time, the president of ABL, Merval Pereira, pointed out that when he was elected he signed Heloisa Buarque de Hollanda, but in diploma was already his birth name.

Recognized as one of the main voices of Brazilian feminism, he stressed, during his inaugural discourse, the gender disparity within the GLA itself. Heloisa Teixeira was elected with 34 of the 37 votes.
