Prime Minister Luís Montenegro
The Prime Minister thanked “the excellence of medical care and the competence of the professionals of the National Health Service”, after this Friday, having spent a few hours at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, to treat “an episode of cardiac arrhythmia.”
Luís Montenegro was hospitalized at the Santa Maria hospital in Lisbon this Friday, due to a Cardiac Arrhythmia Episode.
The prime minister was admitted at 1 pm, was sent to the cardiology service, and was discharged at the beginning of the night.
“It’s okay, it was an episode of cardiac arrhythmia, a question that afflicts me from when insteadvery sporadically, ”said Luís Montenegro, to journalists, inside the car he left the hospital.
The prime minister detailed that, when he had symptoms this morning, “there was no alternative” but to move to the hospital.
“I’m fine, you can be calm and, by the way, I want to reassure the Portuguese (…) everything is quiet and I will rest at the weekend And resume the normal agenda next Monday, ”he said in a brief statement to journalists at the hospital door.
Asked if he could detail what happened, he replied, “I mainly want to wish you a good weekend. They were the last to be with me before leaving and the first after leaving,” he said smiling.
Later, in a publication on the social network X, the Prime Minister thanked the Excellence in medical and NHS care.
“It is with tranquility that I am on the way home to rest over the weekend, after a time at Santa Maria Hospital, where I treated an episode of cardiac arrhythmia. Once again I witnessed the excellence of medical care and the competence of the national health service professionals. Thank you all and I also thank the many affection messages I received,” he wrote.

Political rivals had good heart

In the morning, Luís Montenegro had chaired the meeting on the Parque Cidades do Tejo project, where he had attended the meeting with the municipalities involved, having made statements to journalists when he left, around 12:30.
The Prime Minister will enjoy the weekend to rest. On Monday, Montenegro’s agenda has three points: “Land Defense Industry Day”, in Vila Nova de Gaia, a visit to three family health units in Santa Maria da Feira and, in the afternoon, will preside over to the Superior Council for Internal Security in Lisbon.
What is a cardiac arrhythmia?
Cardiac arrhythmia is a is a medical condition that occurs when the patient checks a abnormal heartbeat.
As explained, these changes in the heartbeat rhythm can manifest by:
- Frequency changes with which heartbeat occurs – and can be faster and slower;
- or even by regularity changes with which the heartbeat occurs.
As the NHS warns, some arrhythmias are considered benign, but others may be fatal and originate sudden death.
In addition to increasing or decreased heartbeat frequency (or beating irregularities), possible symptoms of arrhythmias are: palpitations; chest pain; difficulty in breathing.
When arrhythmias affect the heart’s ability to pump blood, they can cause Sickness, dizziness and fainting.
