The Burmese Military Board said this Saturday that there are a total of 1,002 dead, 2,376 injured and 30 disappeared by the earthquake that shook the center-norte of Burma (Myanmar) on Friday, according to the first counts after visiting some devastated areas.
The military regime, which holds power in Burma from the 2021 coup d’etat, published the figures in a statement released by the Telegram channel of the National Radio and Television Service (MRTV), after informing hours before almost 700 dead only in the Mandalay region, among the most affected.
The Chief of the Board, Min Aung Hlaing, visited Mandalay on Saturday, and the regime indicated through MRTV that data is still being collected.
The tremor was recorded this Friday at 12:50 local time (6:20 GMT), 10 kilometers deep and with the epicenter between the cities of Sagaing and Mandalay, about 17 kilometers from the last city, the second largest city of Burma, according to the United States Geological Service (USGS).
The Armed Forces, which were made with power in Burma through a coup in 2021 and plunged the country into semi -art and conflict, have declared the state of emergency in six zones: Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Shan, Naipyidó and Bago.
Burma is in a spiral of economic crisis and conflict from the assonated, with clashes in much of the country between the army and civil and prodemocratic guerrillas, which worsens the access and distribution of humanitarian aid.
The Military Board on Friday made an unusual request for help after declaring the state of emergency.
The United Nations Rapporteur for Burma, Tom Andrews, warned that the Military Board uses military aid as “weapon and asked the international community to channel it through the democratic opposition, headed by the self -denominated government of National Unity, and the ethnic groups opposed to the army.
The powerful earthquake was also felt in neighboring countries such as China, India and Thailand, in whose capital, Bangkok, caused at least 9 dead and more than 100 missing after three buildings under construction were collapsed
