High -quality sleep is the basis of health, but few people know that the key to the cleanliness of bed linen can also be the key to it. Forget modern detergents and return to the proven method of our grandmothers, which has been operating for decades. This simple trick will ensure that your bed linen will remain fresh, fragrant and pleasant to the touch much longer. In Czechoslovakia, everyone did it.
Why is regular bed linen washing so important?
We spend about eight hours in bed every night. During this time, our bed linen becomes home for sweat, dead skin cells, dust and mites. These impurities create an ideal environment for the multiplication of bacteria and microorganisms that can cause allergies and significantly reduce the quality of our sleep.
Experts therefore recommend washing bed linen at least every 2-3 weeks. Allergy sufferers should even shorten this interval to one week. But the washing itself is often not enough for the laundry to remain fresh for a long time. Here comes the forgotten trick of our grandmothers – starching.
Starching: The Miracle Method for Prolonged Freshness
Starching has been a common part of fabric care in the past. This simple method not only extends the cleanliness of bed linen, but also gives it an elegant look and a pleasant touch.
The secret of starch is that on the surface of the fibers it creates a protective layer that prevents the penetration of dirt and sweat into the fabric. This makes the bed linen remain more hygienic and fresh for much longer.
The best part is that you can easily prepare starch at home from commonly available ingredients. All you need is water and potato starch. The procedure is really simple:
- Pour 2-3 tablespoons of potato starch in half a glass of cold water and mix thoroughly.
- Bring 3 liters of water to a boil in a pot.
- While stirring, slowly pour the starch mixture into boiling water and stir until the mixture thickens.
- Dilute the resulting starch with lukewarm water in a bath or a large bowl.
- Place the bed linen previously washed and soak for about 15 minutes.
- Squeeze the excess water and allow the laundry to dry.
The bedding treated in this way will not only be fresh and fragrant, but also becomes more pleasant to the touch and more resistant to contamination.
WARNING! Not every bed linen can be starching
Although starching is a great method, it is not a versatile solution for all kinds of fabrics. This procedure can only be safely applied to cotton or linen bed linen.
Avoid starching polyester fabrics, crust materials, satin or flannel. Their properties and structure of the fibers could suffer when starching and instead of improving you could damage the laundry.
