Ahmed Al Sharaa said he intends to ‘build a strong and stable state’ during the transition period, expected to last five years
The interim president of, Ahmed Al Sharaa, announced on Saturday (29) the formation of a new government. In office since January, Al Sharaa said he intends to “build a strong and stable state” during the transition period, scheduled to last five years. Newly formed management has 23 ministries, with only one woman, Hind Kabawat, named for the social affairs and work portfolio. Among the main positions, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Assaad Al Shaibani, and Defense, Mourhaf Abu Qasra, both allies of Al Sharaa remain.
The head of general intelligence services, Anas Khattab, was appointed interior minister, while Raed Al-Saleh, leader of Syrian blue helmets, took over the Ministry of Emergency Situations and disasters. The government transition began after Islamist coalition seized power on December 8 and expelled former President Bashar Al Assad. Since then, a ministerial team had been running the country’s affairs.
The international community has charged an inclusive transition. Al Sharaa, however, has full powers to define the legislature, the executive and the judiciary through a constitutional statement, which provides for the separation between the powers. At the end of the transitional period, Syrian is expected to perform elections based on a new constitution.
