Chamberlain’s return to the US was spectacular – he became the most desirable Hollywood actor. He was renowned worldwide by film roles such as Musketier Aramis from the film Three Musketeers (1973), Edmond Dantes in the film Count Monte Christo (1975) and King Louis XIV. In the adventurous-historical film Man with Iron Mask (1977).

As a 45-year-old he played in the film Japanese Islands (1980). He won the second Golden Globe for the role of John Blackthorn in the Miniseries of Šogún (1980). Three years later, he showed an unforgettable performance as a priest Ralph de Bricassart in the TV series Birds in Trip (1983), where he performed alongside Rachel Ward.

In the 1990s he appeared in two successful theater productions in My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music. In the following years, Chamberlain was also interested in the art and ecology. For example, he was involved in protecting the Yosemite National Park in the US and Hawaii.

Already retired appeared in the series Desperate Wives (2007), Brothers and sisters (2010, 2011) or Twin Peaks (2017). He also performed in the story horror movie Nightmare Cinema (2018) alongside Mickey Rourka. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his lifelong merits in cinematography. Chamberlain publicly confessed to homosexuality in his autobiographical book Shattered Love (2003).
