Rumeysa Ozturk was arrested after publishing an article asking the university in which he studies recognized genocide against Palestinians
A Judge of the State of Massachusetts barred on Friday (28.Mar.Mar.2025) the deportation of Turkey’s 30-year-old postdoctoral student Rumeysa Ozturk, who published an opinion article in a student newspaper at the University of Tufts asking the institution to recognize Israel’s genocide against Palestinians.
Ozturk was arrested on Tuesday (25.mar.2025), about 1 year after the publication of the article, by federal agents who wore masks. She had a review visa revoked. According to the US National Security Department, Ozturk is accused of “involvement in Hamas Defense Activities”. The information is from Reuters.
A video of the moment of Ozturk’s arrest circulates on social networks. Watch (1min38s):

Hours after Ozturk’s arrest, a request was made so that it was not transferred from Massachusetts. The student, however, is detained in the state of Louisiana. Judge Denise Casper from Boston stated in the decision that, until it is decided whether or not her court has jurisdiction about the case, Ozturk cannot be deported. The magistrate ordered the government of Donald Trump (Republican Party) to answer the student’s questions.
Mahsa Khanbabai, Ozturk’s lawyer, classified the decision as “The 1st step for Rumeysa to be released and can return home to continue her studies”.
Oncu Keceli, spokesman for Turkey’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, said the folder is acting to free Ozturk and that consular and legal support has been made available for the Turkish diplomatic mission in the US.
“Our consul of Houston visited our citizen where she is being detained in Louisiana on March 28. Our citizen’s requests were sent by his lawyer to local authorities”Said, in an X -publication (former Twitter).
Trump’s government has promised the deportation of foreigners who speak in favor of Palestine, accusing them of supporting the extremist group Hamas and Anti -Semitism. Administration determinations were criticized by several groups, including Jewish institutions in the US.
More than 300 visas, including students, have already been revoked due to pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
