In the past, orchid cultivation was considered the peak of art, especially when we only rarely encountered these plants. Over time, however, they have become popular rooms. But be careful what you are asking in their neighborhood so that you do not prepare for beautiful flowers prematurely.
Orchids can beautify the apartment for weeks with their flower, unless we know them unconsciously. Unfortunately, it may happen that their beauty literally loses from day to day. Why? For example, due to the action of ethylene, which accelerates both the process of ripening fruit and the “aging” of flowers. Therefore, it is necessary to be very careful where we place a bowl of fruit that ethylene releases. It can be a beautiful still life as a world -famous artist’s image, but you will not enjoy it for a long time.

Ethylene affects hormonal processes
Ethylene is a gas that is released when ripening fruit such as apples or bananas, but also produced, for example, tomatoes. Its high concentration affects hormonal processes in plants and thus speeds up flowering and shortens the time for which the flowers are so beautiful. The cells of the plants become aging faster, the flowers fall and the plant returns where it started some time ago – it will try to deploy more buds. Of course, only in a few months, until then we will have to wait…
It’s not just about orchids
Similarly, as in orchids, ethylene can also act in the case of roses, daffodils, lilies and other flowers that are significantly sensitive to the action of this gas. While plants that are supposed to decorate our homes with flower are not welcome, on the other hand, it is excellent to support faster maturation of some vegetables, such as peppers.
Beware of drafts
So what should we take care of if we want to enjoy the beauty of blooming orchids as long as possible? It is quite simple – it is simply necessary to remember that the fruit belongs to a place other than the orchids. For sure, beware of air flow, because it could happen that ethylene its influence gets to plants and from the far part of the room. This is especially true if you bring home a larger number of apples that you are going to process. It is sufficient for a few hours to expose the gas and orchid flowers to the ground.
Help orchids to bloom for a long time
On the other hand, what could we do to support the rich and long flowering of orchids? Let us give them good light, that is, intense, but scattered. The shade corner and the direct sun rays will not make them very happy. Ideally, the temperature should fluctuate between 20 and night 18 ° C and we have to be careful about waterlogging that orchids hate. It is therefore necessary to allow the substrate to dry slightly between the individual watering.
Give plants ideal conditions
Orchids come from an environment with high air humidity, and of course they would also like to be in our home conditions. Ideal for them are 50 – 70 %, so in winter, when the air is drowning and the air is drier, put on the radiator to evaporator. For beautiful flowers it is necessary to offer plants also nutrition in the form of fertilizer, which is available in specialized stores. It will also help several weeks of rest in a colder environment, trim the flower stems after flowering and protection against drafts. If the orchids get proper care and if they are well placed, you can now look forward to a flood of exotic flowers.
