Declaration was a response to the letter sent by US President Donald Trump and marks Tehran’s first official demonstration on the subject
The president of, Masoud Pezeshkian, said on Sunday that he rejected direct negotiations with the United States about the Iranian nuclear program. The statement was a response to the letter sent by the US President, and marks Tehran’s first official demonstration on the matter.
According to Pezeshkian, the Iranian response, transmitted through the Government of Oman, maintains the possibility of indirect conversations with Washington. However, he stressed that these contacts have not advanced since Trump withdrew the US in 2018 of the nuclear agreement signed between Iran and World Powers.
In the following years, tensions in the region have increased, especially after the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas in 2023. The conflict resulted in Israeli attacks against leaders of Tehran’s allied militant groups, which are part of the so -called “resistance axis.” At the same time, the United States have been bombing against the Humuthi rebels in Yemen, Iran’s allies, raising the risk of a military attack against the Iranian nuclear program.
“We did not avoid dialogue; what caused us problems was the breaking of promises,” Pezeshkian said in televised speech during a meeting of the cabinet. “The United States must demonstrate that they are able to build confidence.” The US State Department responded to the statement by stating that President Trump made it clear that the United States will not allow Iran to get a nuclear weapon. “The president expressed his willingness to discuss an agreement with Iran,” added a spokesman for the US government. “If the Iranian regime doesn’t want to negotiate, Trump will look for other options, which will be very bad for Iran.”
