An event on Monday afternoon (31) in the Senate in Brasilia marks the release of a book with revealing and rare images, as well as the reprint of two works that became references about that moment of rupture.
61 years ago, on March 31, the general’s troops left Juiz de Fora towards Rio de Janeiro, starting the coup, which would consolidate the following days. The event pushed the country for an authoritarian period that lasted 21 years.
The main novelty among the books is “1964 – Images of a coup of state”, organized by historians and Danilo Marques and the researcher of Brazilian literature Livia de Sá Baião. It brings together 71 images from the period from November 1963, with the main episodes that accentuated the country’s political tension on April 15, 1964, with the inauguration of the first president of the military regime.
In this case, image is not synonymous with photography. There are relevant and little known photos, such as the scene in which a soldier assaults a man in Recife on April 1, 1964. Book cover is a record of Rubens Américo, from O Cruzeiro magazine.
But newspaper headlines, document reproductions, advertising posters, illustrations and flames are also emerged.
“To show these images is to bring up the disruptive strength of the event, allowing the understanding of their resonances in the present and reconfiguring our perception of the past,” the organizers write in the presentation of the book.
According to historian Danilo Marques, “perspectives and details that often go unnoticed” were taken into account in the selection of images. The team, he says, also sought to “guarantee a broad and diverse view of the coup d’état, presenting images from all regions of the country.”
In this sense, the work does not include, for example, consecrated work, the most remembered photographer when the theme is the dictatorship.
On the other hand, he emphasizes an image seen by a few: on April 15, 1964, he took office as president and, in front of him, the governor of Minas Gerais, greeting the
“This photo symbolizes the seal of the urgent conspiracy and the coup action so far,” says Marques about the record of Jean Solari of O Cruzeiro magazine.
“We wanted to portray the creation of the institutional instability situation that guaranteed the deposition of and the occupation of the state by the scammers. This process was drawn in the months prior to March 31,” says the historian.
The strategy of conspirators can be seen, for example, in an illustration of the booklet “its part in the fight against communism”, produced by the IPES (Institute of Research and Social Studies), which brought together entrepreneurs committed to overthrow João Goulart.
Each image is followed by a comment signed by historians who make up the Republic Project, a group of UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais) led by Starling. In addition to offering historical contextualization, these texts contribute to the reader to see the event under new angles.
The event of this Monday also promotes the relaunch by the Senate publisher of two books linked to that period: “64 coup seen and commented by the White House”, by the journalist, and “Anatomy of the Crisis”, by the political scientist (1935-2019).
It can be done from the end of this week.
