Russia’s Supreme Court will assess the application for the removal of Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations, where it was included in 2003.
The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation announced on Monday that he received a request from the Attorney General Krasnova for the elimination of the Afghan Taliban movement from the list of terrorist organizations, which came over 20 years ago. This application will be assessed on April 17, informs TASR referring to AP and AFP.
In December 2024, the Lower Chamber of the Russian Parliament, the State Duma, a law that allows the court to discard organizations from the list at the request of the Attorney General or his deputy. In order for the court to decide, the facts must be available that the organization has ceased to carry out an activity aimed at promoting, justifying and supporting terrorism after being included in the list.
Taliban was included in Russia on a list of terrorist organizations in 2003. Any contacts with such groups are criminal according to the laws there. Nevertheless, the Taliban delegations participated in various forums organized by Moscow. Russian leaders argued in pointing out this contradiction by the need to involve the Taliban in stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan, writes AP.
Russian officials have repeatedly spoken about plans to remove the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations. In October 2021 – After the departure of US soldiers from Afghanistan and after re -taking power in the country Taliban – Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is approaching this decision, but first the UN Security Council should do so.
After returning to power, the Taliban fights against the competing jihadist group Islamic State of Korásán (IS-K). Its members applied for responsibility for the attack on the Crocus City Hall concert hall in Krasnogorsk in the Moscow region, which lost 22 March 2024 by 145 people and more than 500 people suffered injuries. It was the bloodiest terrorist attack in Russia in almost two decades.
