Syria’s interim president Ahmed Al-Sharaa announced on Saturday night (29.Mar.2025) the formation of a provisional government that will lead the country by a transition after more than 50 years of Assad family dictatorship.
Sharaa, who led the rebel forces coalition that overthrew the regime in December, appointed new ministers during a ceremony at the Damascus Presidential Palace.
The cabinet includes close allies in the Ministries of Defense, Foreign and Interior, as well as representatives of ethnic minorities and a woman.
Raed al-Saleh, head of the Civil Defense Organization White helmets, was appointed minister of disasters and emergencies. Hind Kabawat, who helped organize a recent national dialogue conference, will be the only woman in government as a minister of social affairs.
In gesture to the Kurdish minority, Sharaa appointed a representative of this ethnic group as Minister of Education, a portfolio that will reformulate the educational system of the Old Regime.
The provisional government will rule for 5 years to allow the adoption of a permanent constitution and the realization of elections, according to the provisional letter adopted this month.
